Cavani on Fire vs Saints

See this content in the original post

This weeks analysis focusses on the recent match between Southampton and Manchester United.

With United being 2-0 down at half time Solskjaer made an inspired substitution bringing Edinson Cavani onto the field for the second half. The result was well worth it with the Uruguayan getting one assist and two goals.

Cavani operated in a central position with Marcus Rashford and the threat of two strikers proved to be devastating. Cavani was key in playing central, occupying both center backs and a constant goal threat. His movement was incredible, dropping deep hen needed, making intelligent runs when the ball was in wide areas, he looked like the striker United have missed in the last few years since the days of Robin Van Persie or Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Man United always has deadly strikers who fed off of great service. As good as Martial and Rashford are they are not out and out goal scorers. Martial has done well lately but an old fashioned number 9 is what has been needed. Someone who guarantees goals!

Key features

  • Good hold up Play

  • Intelligent front post runs to get on crosses

  • Ability to finish multiple ways

  • Sensing and anticipating opportunities

  • Excellent work rate to defend, track back and work for the team

At 33 Cavani is still in awesome shape. He is best suited when playing central and if United can provide him with service you can be sure he will score lots of goals in a red shirt.
